Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney filed the plea on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the case terminated for various reasons including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the court they planned to present several petitions to throw out the legal matter before a trial, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's proceedings was first handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and offspring Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration dismissed.

After listening to the magistrate state his legal protections and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Historical Information

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the time, the director was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

While in office, James Comey triggered a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, causing disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors claim James Comey provided false information to Congress during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, block and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording Mr Comey published to his Instagram after he was charged, he said he was innocent and charged the former president of behaving like a "dictator".

"Our household have understood for years that there are ramifications to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."

These allegations against James Comey came after Trump shared on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
